Breaking: SDP Collapses in Bassa as Top Political Figures Defect to APC

In what many are calling a seismic political realignment, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Bassa Local Government Area has suffered a major collapse — with key political actors returning to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in droves.

Leading the wave of defections is Hon. Ranyi Daniya, former APC House of Assembly member for Bassa State Constituency (2019–2023), and Hon. Solomon Abwa, a founding member of the APC who also served as Director-General for the SDP’s campaign in Bassa LGA and on Muri Ajaka’s 2023 gubernatorial campaign council.

Who Is Hon. Solomon Abwa?

Abwa is no lightweight. Widely regarded as a grassroots mobilizer with a strong media presence and deep influence in the Bassa Komu district, his move back to the APC is being seen as both strategic and symbolic — signaling a “homecoming” for many.

Joining the political migration are Barrister Dugbanya, all ward chairmen, LGA executive members, SDP caucus leaders, and the Elders Advisory Council of Bassa SDP — essentially emptying out the party's operational structure in the area.

Why the Shift?

In a joint press statement, the defectors credited Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s “impressive performance” as their primary reason for switching sides. They lauded the Governor’s commitment to improving Bassa’s political and economic standing, calling him “a listening leader” capable of addressing long-standing marginalization.

Their message to the people of Kogi? “Join hands with the Governor to sustain this progress beyond 2027.”

Who Welcomed Them?

The defectors were received with open arms by top APC figures including:

H.E. Joel Oyibo, Deputy Governor of Kogi State

Hon. Yakubu Okala, aka Mr. Integrity

Hon. Imam Shaibu Mutari, Commissioner of Commerce and a proud son of Bassa LGA

A Blogger’s Take: While Governor Ododo clinched Bassa LGA in the 2023 elections, the margin left much to be desired — especially given the long history of political marginalization in the area and its exclusion from the dominant Igala political narrative. That said, this mass defection could be the game-changer APC needs to secure a smoother ride in 2027 and beyond.

From all indications, the APC in Bassa LGA just gained a significant boost — both in numbers and in influence.
