BUILDING PEOPLE, BUILDING POWER: THE ENDURING LEADERSHIP LEGACY OF YAHAYA BELLO By Ghali M. H.
BY Ghali M. H.
Former Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello, CON remains one of the most consequential figures in the political evolution of Kogi State. His tenure was not defined merely by occupying office but by a deliberate effort to redefine leadership, inclusion, and development across the state. For many citizens, his era represented a clear departure from old political patterns and the beginning of a more purposeful and people centered governance.
Governor Bello came into leadership with a vision anchored on unity, fairness, and opportunity. His administration gave renewed hope to communities that had long felt excluded from the political mainstream, particularly the Ebira people and other marginalized groups. This inclusive approach reshaped political participation and restored confidence in governance, creating a sense of belonging across ethnic and regional lines.
Development under his leadership was structured and intentional. Major road projects and improved transportation networks enhanced connectivity between communities and boosted economic activity. In education, his government focused on upgrading facilities and strengthening policies that improved learning conditions for students. The healthcare sector also saw meaningful progress through better equipped facilities and improved service delivery, helping to enhance the overall well-being of residents.
Beyond physical projects, Yahaya Bello’s most lasting contribution lies in his emphasis on human capital development. He believed that sustainable progress depends on empowering people and preparing the next generation of leaders. This philosophy was clearly reflected in his mentorship and support for capable individuals within his political ecosystem.
One of the strongest examples of this approach is Senator Engr. Abubakar Sadiku Ohere. Through consistent trust and strategic appointments, Governor Bello created room for Senator Ohere to grow and demonstrate leadership capacity. From his roles as Special Adviser to Commissioner for Works and Housing and later Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, Senator Ohere delivered with competence and commitment, justifying the confidence placed in him.
His emergence as the APC Senatorial flag bearer for Kogi Central in 2023 and his subsequent electoral victory highlighted the effectiveness of leadership built on mentorship, loyalty, and performance. It also underscored Governor Bello’s ability to identify talent, nurture it, and position it for success.
The relationship between Yahaya Bello and Abubakar Ohere offers a clear lesson in leadership. When leaders invest in people, promote inclusion, and build strong alliances, they create continuity, loyalty, and long-term impact. Such leadership goes beyond tenure and leaves behind a legacy that shapes the future.
As Kogi State continues its journey forward, the imprint of former Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello remains visible in its political structure, development trajectory, and leadership culture. His story stands as a reference point for purposeful governance and a reminder that true power lies in building people to build society.
