HON. WEMI JONES, FCIB: A POLITICAL ASSET ANCHORED ON LOYALTY AND TRUST

In politics, two traits set a leader apart—loyalty and trust. When these are found in an individual, such a person becomes a political asset, not a liability; a pillar of progress, not a burden. In Kogi State today, one name embodies these qualities with distinction: Hon. Wemi Jones, FCIB, the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology.

Under his watch, the Ministry of Education has witnessed unprecedented transformation. Through his visionary leadership, the Free Education Act was established, securing the future of thousands of Kogi children. He championed the establishment of two new universities—one in Kogi Central and another in Kogi West—bringing higher education closer to the people. The School of Nursing and Midwifery was upgraded to meet modern standards, while the long-awaited MBBS program was reinstated at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba.

Perhaps one of the most impactful policies under his leadership is the government’s assumption of responsibility for the payment of WAEC, JAMB, BECE, and Common Entrance examination fees for certificate students. This singular gesture has lifted a heavy financial burden from countless parents while ensuring equal access to education for all.

These achievements were possible because of the unwavering trust and loyalty Hon. Wemi Jones commands within the political family. The former Governor, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, listened to him and supported his initiatives because he saw in him a man of principle, loyalty, and commitment to service.

A test of his loyalty was seen during the build-up to the Kogi State gubernatorial primaries. While many within the inner circle obtained nomination forms to contest, Hon. Wemi Jones made a different choice. He refused to contest against Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, a man who had generously supported educational programs such as the Kogi School Adoption and Mentorship Program, donating science textbooks worth millions of naira across the three senatorial districts. Instead of pursuing personal ambition, Hon. Wemi Jones stood firm with loyalty, endorsing Ododo and further solidifying his reputation as a trustworthy ally.

During the campaign, he accepted the role of Grand Patron of the Ododo School-to-School Campaign Movement, a grassroots political mobilization that cut across the entire state. His involvement showcased him as a unifying figure, a politician whose influence extended beyond his region of origin.

Today, his leadership continues to breathe life into Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 educational policy. The establishment of the Kogi State Senior Secondary Education Board as a complement to the State Science, Technical Education and Teaching Service Commission (STETSCOM) is another forward-looking achievement under his stewardship.

Hon. Wemi Jones, FCIB, is more than just a Commissioner; he is a trustworthy and loyal political leader who has consistently proven himself as an asset to Kogi State. His blend of integrity, loyalty, and visionary service places him among the few leaders whose legacy will be remembered not only in politics but in the lives of generations of Kogites who will benefit from the foundations he has laid in education.
